Canadian Connection

I sometimes think I made a mistake back in 2009, when I chose the name National Home Watch Association for our group. You see, Canada has always represented a very important segment of not only our members, but of the many clients being serviced here in the United States. We began to reach out to the few Canadian companies that performed “Home Watch-like services” in 2010, and in 2012, we welcomed our very first member from Ontario. Since then, we have grown our Canadian membership to include members from British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, and even Quebec. But it has been very difficult to get a true toehold across all of Canada. I have always been convinced that Canada’s Home Watch industry is growing steadily. I know this based on my many conversations with Canadian businesspeople. Prior to the pandemic, the NHWA had plans to open an office in Canada. The likely locations were Toronto or Calgary. We all know the havoc created by the pandemic, so plans were put on hold indefinitely.

The name, National Home Watch Association, might have hurt our efforts to grow participation and membership by Canadian companies, but I assure you that the Home Watch industry is truly international. The Advisory Board of the NHWA has a Canadian member representing the Canadian point of view. We have a Canadian chapter that meets quarterly to discuss marketing and how to grow members’ businesses. But this is not enough. We know that Canadian Snowbirds face insurance challenges that threaten coverage while they are away. We also know that more Canadian citizens need to be educated on the need for Home Watch. Additionally, we know that as diverse as Canada is, it will take more than what we are doing currently.

So, I’d like to ask our current, as well as future, Canadian members to join us in helping to grow this much-needed industry, giving us a true Canadian Connection. Once again, the NHWA plans to have a physical presence in Canada, and we believe that this will help to assure Canadian companies that they are truly an integral part of what we do. Consider this an official invitation to talk with us to see how the NHWA can help grow your business, and by doing so, the Canadian Home Watch industry. I will be meeting with our Canadian Leadership Team to set a time and date for a virtual meeting to discuss the details.

As always, I wish you

Much success,

Jack Luber
Executive Director
