Welcome, The Island Company of Kiawah Island, SC, to the NHWA Family!
Owner Will Shiver was born in Americus, Georgia, and comes from a family of entrepreneurs. His great grandfather founded Shiver Lumber Company in 1900. From an early age, Will worked in the family business, stocking shelves, loading trucks, and waiting on customers. After high school, Will attended The University of Georgia, where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Real Estate in 2007.
While still enrolled at UGA, Will was introduced to a business idea by a good friend’s father who owned a second home on the South Carolina coast. The idea was to establish a company that would serve as the one single contact for an absentee homeowner to call for ANY service needs at their home. Will immediately loved the idea, and he started researching the concept right away. He moved to Charleston, SC, and launched what is now known as The Island Company in early 2008. Will began managing homes for absentee homeowners in DeBordieu Colony, Isle of Palms, Sullivans Island, and Charleston.
Two years into running the business, Will was presented with the opportunity to acquire the accounts of another, more established company on Kiawah Island. Utilizing the previous owner’s contacts and relationships, Will began to build the business, focusing on the Kiawah market. In 2018, he became a licensed home builder, which enabled his company to permit and perform all residential projects for their clients without having to source another general contractor. In 2020, Will hired his first in-house maintenance technician, establishing The Island Company’s maintenance and handyman division. The company currently boasts a staff of 16, including bookkeepers, Home Watch inspectors, project managers, and maintenance technicians.
Will is married to Jayne, his wonderful wife of eight years. They have two beautiful daughters and live in an historic home that they renovated in downtown Charleston. In his spare time, Will enjoys playing golf, boating, spending time with his family, and watching his Georgia Bulldogs.
A little about the National Home Watch Association: The NHWA was formed in 2009 in order to establish and maintain the highest industry standards for Home Watch and absentee homeowner services throughout the United States and Canada (www.nationalhomewatchassociation.org).
